Fruit Syrup Gift Range

An NZ based design agency approached me with a fantastic challenge ... To create a stunning and delicious x3 bottle gift pack which boasts the products glorious colours and allows light to sparkle through at every angle.
There were 2 key no-no's ...
NOT to be made from corrugated board
NOT to be a drab windowed carton
Music to my ears as I wouldn't have dreamed of making something so standard and predictable! Knowing this brief was a cracker and my packaging senses tingling with excitement I swiftly went to work to create this masterpiece ...
The pack was designed to show as much of the bottles as physically possible - I managed this by engineering the top & bottom walls to take the bottles base & cap - just the right size to load the tops in and snap the bases into place ... awesome ... however, these little beauties are heavy and needed extra support than just the cardboard to make sure they stay nice and safe. The solution was to design and develop custom and perfectly sculpted E Flute fittings that are easily slipped into the cavity walls during make-up, adding strength, stability and the final touch to have this design looking immaculate & sleek on the outside, whilst having a solid corrugated skeleton system underneath.

Day in, day out I live and breathe packaging design. From a cheeky little scamp of 17 to a now, rather respectful 32 year old I've been a structural packaging designer. Starting THINK Packaging 3 years ago my skills have been available to agencies and new businesses around the globe as their very own packaging ninja, and this got me thinking… "I wonder if I could produce awesome, game changing work for myself this time?"
An idea had been rattling around my head for some time and eventually made its way into the ideas book, sketched, then straight onto CAD. Once I had cut my first prototype I stood back and revelled in the pure, natural beauty of it and like an over excited child at Christmas I started showing it off to fellow designers & friends. All who saw this instantly knew that this wasn’t just an idea anymore, this had to happen. So Rest In Pets was created…
The death of a beloved pet can be hugely painful, and it’s difficult to plan for such a sad event. But think back to your early childhood memories of pets passing away. Goldfish flushed unceremoniously down the toilet. Guinea pigs and bunnies wrapped in old tea towels, and cats squashed into shoeboxes. Surely our furry family members are worth a bit of forethought?
Rest In Pets has designed and tested a set of products that finally gives pet lovers an option. Our smaller designs use a classic coffin shape, a well known visual metaphor that everyone can relate to. It adds a sense of solemn dignity.
For the large casket, we designed a new hexagonal shape. At the end of their lives, cats are best farewelled curled up... maybe remembering one of their many afternoon naps. The hexagonal shape suits this best.
If you wish to have your pet cremated the urn is an ideal way to hold the ashes. If you wish to scatter these at some stage there is an easy pull tab to do this. Alternatively, if you seek bury your pet after cremation you could lay them to rest in one of our caskets.

Bolu are purveyors of fine quality tea, directly sourced from Fair Trade plantations in Darjeeling, North India. The client's brief was to design a suite of original, contemporary packaging that created an overall 'umbrella' look to the consumer, but that also reflected the individuality of each tea variety.
The starting point to achieving this goal was the creation of a totally unique pack shape. After exploring many options, a perfect balance of aesthetics and function were applied. Visually the pack looks completely harmonious-due to the integration of flowing, curved lines that echo traditional Indian architecture. However form is nothing without function, so the true genius was ensuring that this unique pack was also cost effective to produce and easy to assemble.
Inviting Curious to the party was the key to success in this epic project. They lept into action designing sumptuous iconography and fused with it with a vibrant colour palette, to create a contemporary range of packs. Brilliant.
Bolu, THINK and Curious - just your cup of tea!

Curious Design were giving Warwick's accessory range a bit of refresh and I was asked to re shape the packaging for the ruler, protractor, eraser, sharpener & pencils set. Originally these were sold on a piece of printed card & bagged up. They were looking for something a little more stylish but would still stay streamlined and could easily hang in stores ...
With a bit on ninja cardboard engineering, the items now fit nicely on a internal fitting and housed in a sleek, curved pillow pack style carton - accompanied with a smart window & of course a hanger with a euro-hook.

Candella is Colchis Ltd's version of an ancient energy bar, popular in many countries across the Mediterranean and Middle East. The candle shaped fruit and nut roll contains only natural ingredients and is an ideal source of energy and healthy nutrients. It's a tasty treat for the kids lunchbox, a satisfying snack for people on the go and an exotic addition to any gourmet platter.
As these are aimed at the snack market, the package was designed to sit and display nicely along with being easy to grab and open. Using a long triangular body, these packs can stack display easily and come with a cool little tear-strip so you can rip open and enjoy ...Packaging2012 -
Tandem Photography is a Christchurch based company of professional photographers committed to offering excellence in a diverse range of photographic services. These guys have become one of the most sought after Christchurch wedding photographers and are available within New Zealand and internationally for wedding photography. Award winning wedding photographers work with you in a unique way using two photographers to capture your day in a natural and unobtrusive way. At Tandem Photography they are passionate in their work and proud of their results ...
In respect to enquiries and future work, Tandem wanted a nice presentation pack that they could mail out to potential clients that would have all the information that they may require. Plus, to look a little fancy too.
A paper covered, rigid box & lid was the way to go, a nice little fitting with a ribbon for easy access to the goodies and a sleeve to finish it off, lovely.

Spicers have been servicing people's paper needs in New Zealand for almost 100 years, and maintain a strong global identity with operations in Australia, Hong Kong, Malaysia, Singapore and the United States. They say that there is nothing more exciting than a blank piece of paper .... Paper is a promise, it is one half of a relationship waiting to be completed by the other half - your vision.
With this in mind they wanted to extend their already enormous paper range and add new boards that are perfect for sign & display needs.
Generally when a range like this comes out, paper companies tend to stack A4 sized pieces into a large, crude box and lob it on your desk and say "here, look at our new range .. we do really thick stuff now" You politely say "that's great news" and start the process of deciding where to put this oversized box that you've just been struck with. It generally ends up kicked under you desk or in a filling cabinet somewhere because you can't bare to look at it.
Spicers recognized this and decided to make the pieces the same size as a swatch book - easy.
The pack was designed to show off some whizzy cardboard engineering using their product and effortlessly have their new range easily accessible and more importantly ... worthy of sitting on your desk.

Greg is a pretty whizz illustrator and found my details through the design grapevine ... He contacted me and asked (demanded) that I create him a portfolio piece that would encapsulate his talent. He had been fortunate enough to bump into and chat to the art director of Wallpaper* Magazine whilst in Auckland at the Semi Permanent exhibition. Greg still appeals that he was NOT stalking him ... The facts still remain unknown and rather shadey!
Wallpaper* Mag receive thousands of emails with "ooh, ooh, look at my work" all of the time and Greg was tipped off that hardly any of them were read, as the guy just simply has not got the time to go through them all. However, he said that he can't help himself if something was to be delivered through the mail ...
So - Greg & I sat down and discussed that we would create something funky, different and that would travel across the globe and still look like it had been handled like the crown jewels. Creating multiple layers of corrugated card and cutting cool little cut-outs, it made the perfect hollowed out book that effortlessly showed off his work and presented in a way that received a chorus of applause when it arrived on the directors desk in the UK. Needless to say that Greg has now pushed his way to the top of the list when it comes to choosing an illustrator.

These guys have raised the bar in kids hair products ... Making the purest, yummiest kids hair products known to man. Now they’ve got five super duper products that have been fully kid tested and approved. So they were ready to go into hair salons and show them off.
The product itself looks so cool & vibrant, the display needed to be designed to show the goods as much as possible, kinda like a stage. The base of the bottles have a small lip so we were able to locate them into cut-outs in the plinth to hold them neatly in place. With the character shaped header card, this little beauty is rather striking ...Packaging2012 -
This snappy dresser isn't made up by some clever graphic design ... oh no.
Entirely made from cardboard, this snazzy little sucker is the perfect leave behind when you intend to make a smart impression. Inspired by a certain English spy - this chap here presents as a nice and tidy suit. Rocking up to meetings looking rather dapper for the occasion, whilst you're wearing your tight black jeans and favourite t-shirt.
The suit jacket opens up like a charm and presents a business card, neatly tucked into the shirt pocket - nice.Advertising, Packaging2012 -
dpod offer design, photo, video, print & packaging ...
Brief: Create a rad DM piece
With such a neat plethora of skills and service, dpod wanted to create a piece that is not only visually striking but encapsulates the dpod brand/experience - "possible is everything"
Where to start ...
Idea - *BANG* Clapper board
In a nutshell ... a working, cracking, snapping clapper board! Within this lies a cinema style pack that slides open on either side just like at the start of the movies. Showing off a DVD video showreel & a snazzy booklet with pro shot images of the packaging that they have created for clients.
With some creative thinking and as always, some rather good cardboard engineering - the vision was born.
The clapper is made from E Flute and has a magnetic closure on the reverse flap. Once you open this, a clever piece of wizardry has the inside popping out around 15mm so you can pull it out easily and think "what the ... how the ... ?" Once you calm your excitement levels, you simply pull either end of the stage apart and it reveals the goodies to drool over.
A perfect solution to demonstrate the dpod experience - design, photo, video, print, packaging & smarts

I was asked to design a knock out concept to use for a pitch to a leading dairy company. This monster design came from an informal chat - discussing perhaps designing a milk carton to fill with info, goodies etc ... before I knew it the conversation turned into a fully fledged ideas smorgasbord!
Cheese wheel - To display all of the various parts, strengths & capabilities of their business
Milk carton - Holding documents & promotional goodies
Cream carton - Sweets/lollies & hunger busting bribery
These were all cool ideas and worked well for the industry but it needed to be presented cleverly.
The Fridge - Not only does this bad boy come with internal fittings to hold everything in place neatly and rather charmingly, it boasts a magnetic hinged door with a PVC window so you can see the delights before opening.

Having a spot at the fine foods tradeshow - ASB Showgrounds, Auckland they wanted to grab attention by showing how creative cardboard can be ... Brilliant!

Even without print this looks phenomenal. To open the pack, you fold 1 half of the heart on the front up and the other down – hey presto, it comes apart ... engaging with the client. They are then presented with the wonderful booklet containing their hearts that they’re so excited to fill out on their special day.
By pulling out the booklet – POW ... there’s the pen, placed to the left side leaving a nice amount of space for some artwork/details. A heart as a cut out so you can see the return courier bag under the fitting. The bag is red so it fits in absolutely perfectly – awesome!Packaging2012 -
These guys make the coolest green bean eco-tableware, ideal for unique food presentation.
A problem that kept raising it's head was just how to hold and present their disposable cones.
So ... in keeping with the eco feel, I designed a corrugated paddle style holder. Perfect for passing around tasty treats by caterers at functions/gatherings. They needed to stand also whilst loading or on display, so triangular feet were developed to match the cones features.
Pretty nice hey ...

The 1:Face Watch empowers YOU to create change in the World.
Each colour watch represents a different cause and has a particular metric tied to it. When you buy a watch, this metric is carried out by our supporting charities. For example, when you buy 1 white watch, our supporting charity One Day's Wages provides food supplements to 16 children in the Horn of Africa.
Designing the packaging for these watches was as awesome as the cause itself ..
This pack is ALL about the watch “simplicity" is key. Using crystal clear PET - crafting/engineering a fitting, the watch looks as if it's floating giving it an edgy, modern, tech feeling. My idea behind the 2 end caps were to frame the watch as they come in black, white, pink, blue (depending on the charity)
These will change the world … Keep your eyes peeled, this is going to be BIG!
Thanks to Fam Mirza for asking me to change the world with them and to join the vision …
Check out the 1:FACE website for details & how you can get hold of these, and indeed change the world "1:FACE at a time"

x4 ONE DROP bottle pack ...
Gusto Design approached me with some very nice work that they'd developed for "ONE DROP"
Three differently labelled bottles which looked the business and needed some packaging to house them.
The brief was to design some stylish as well as sturdy packaging. It was a clear vision to me that the pack would indeed keep with the branding. This meant keeping the display as open as possible and the front having the same shape as the bottle to give prominent shelf appeal and recognition. These packs are to be sold in the likes of Bunnings and Mitre 10 so there will be many hands reaching and grabbing at this product. So the design was engineered to have a custom shaped fitting placed into the bottom to hold the bottles individually. This means that when a buyer picks one out, all of the others stand tall and proud instead of slipping forward or over and looking untidy ... we wouldn't want that now would we! Adding a euroslot too means that these can hang from shelf struts also if needed. Great for when shelf space may be limited or they have a promotion in store.

To design 2 concepts to present as a corporate gift.
Approaching the festive time of year, creating a quirky cracker was the first direction to head in. The ends were designed & engineered so the receiver can twist open & access the items inside. Keeping it classy and adding a nifty personal touch - the clients new house placed on top. Then, with a “light bulb” moment...Based on what every architect has used before, the yellow pencil had to be developed. Changing one end to be the point, the twist open end effortlessly became the eraser & with perfect execution...this blew them away.
A simple note inside or some handmade chocolates inside- a great gift

"So many projects, such little room to store them"
Lucid Design have created a somewhat nifty plywood modular storage system and were in need of some drawers to store projects that the design team are busy working on. Instead of using heavy, bulky and rather expensive plywood to create these we went about designing some sturdy drawers made from corrugated - white B Flute to be precise. These are self make up trays with doubled over ends to retain strength and a lengthy life span.
These are now housing recently completed and current projects whilst fitting nicely into the studios desks and cabinets. By adding a 25mm thumb hole just at one end, you can even choose if you'd like it on show or not - marvellous.Packaging, Industrial Design2011 -
These sweet chalk boards are getting pretty popular & the guys at CHALKD needed a snazzy mailer to not only look the part but to do the business when it’s thrown around by the courier sorters!
First things first … End caps were developed to slip over each end to stop those pretty, hand crafted corners getting bashed in if it was dropped. Designed to be self make up & friction fit - these were just the ticket. Accompanied with a simple cross wallet to form the outer wrap …. marvellous!

1. “Lulalu” Clip - 1 pack & triple pack
Jasper & Black are a Minneapolis based importer and distributor of stationery and giftware, wholesaling to a variety of accounts from J. Crew to MoMA to corner shops. they are a young company and their current assortment includes a company from Sweden called Archie Grand. And out of Australia, a neat photo solution from Photocurator. They were seeking packaging for their “Lulalu” clip (single & triple pack) & wanted to avoid blister packs at all costs! The product is a device to grip & hold papers etc that can be stuck to your fridge, desk, window, you name it… When you press down on the clip, it will make a click noise. When it releases, it will click as well. When pressed down, it opens a cavity which you can slide paper into (from any direction). When released, the cavity closes. They needed some nice packaging that shows off the product in full & for the client to be able to play with it in stores & hear the “clicking” With an easy load solution - here’s the answer….It’s currently undergoing step 2 - graphic design
2. Lulalu Packaging Kits"
These kits hold various combinations of the Lulalu range ....
The brief was to develop x2 "master" boxes : x1 - 5x5" & x1 - 10x10" (to keep within a planogram)
These hold multiple variables of product using different fittings (both cartonboard & crystal clear polypropylene used) The images here are just a few examples of how these packs form & some of the components are still prototypes, hence the plain creamy plastic appearance. Using a bufferwall style tray these items have a framed appearance offering a sense of value and elegance and with the mixture of polypropylene & regular board for the fittings, the products boast a floating/clean appearance. The pack is finished off with a poly sleeve with a euro-slotted hanger in the back that can be pulled up for store display. These creations are now on their way back to Minneapolis, USA to have the artwork laid down and produced for sale across the world.
3. Lulalu Range "x2 Clips"

Mysterious elements in each object start the storytelling. Many of these objects are created to function in one way, then re-function in another.
