Cedars Upper School (UK) Year 10 Design Challenge 2011
2012
Packaging
(December 2011) Travelling back to my former homeland - the UK for the festive season and a spot of business, I was approached by a charming individual ... Mr. Paul Simmonds (Head of the design & technology department - Cedars Upper School, Leighton Buzzard, United Kingdom) After discussing our passion for design and a smashing cup of tea he asked if I would be keen to share my packaging experience with his year 10 students as they will be completing coursework using the art of packaging design.
How could I turn that down ... A fantastic opportunity to emphasize the beauty and importance of this marvellous form on design with some budding future graphic designers! Supplying my cracker design dieline, Paul "Mr. Simmonds" (school talk) typed a brief and set the students the task of using my design to be used for "Barbara's Krispy Kicks" a fictional confectionery company (see below)

Each student had the brief on their desk along with the necessary tools to draw, cut, crease & sample.
- Craft Knife / Scissors
- Creasing stick
- Glue
- Dieline (printed on 350gsm white card)
- Ruler
- Colouring pencils, felts
- Perforations were pre done by "Mr Simmonds" (below)
All that was needed now were the students to arrive and for me to introduce myself and explain the project ...Packaging2012 -
Presenting to the students & explaining the awesomeness of packaging and divulging the designs I had created, and who for within my history, I went on to discuss the brief in depth and handed the challenge over to them ...Packaging2012 -
ENTRIES JUDGED
To be honest there were so many great entries, it was really difficult nailing down a winner and took a lot of thought. A great job by all of the students - thank you so much for taking part and creating such interesting and colourful designs, they certainly brightened up the cold and grey conditions of the UK's weather - kudos.
I managed to whittle them down to a top 4 (see 1st image)
4th place - Hayley Springall
3rd place - Chloe Tishler
2nd place - Jayden Newman
1st place - CHARLOTTE SWANN (featured)
Congratulations Charlotte!
I remember you impressing me in the classroom asking clever and relevant questions in regards to the brand and overall appeal of the packaging, good job. I decided you as the winner due to the overall appearance of the finished design and your ability to express your ideas and have the whole package engage with the consumer with your use of characters and games ... excellent!Packaging2012
